Aspirations Syria > Doncaster
Mumford Corridor, Anglia Ruskin University, East Road CB1 1PT
Following on from Aspirations Doncaster, the bulk of which was exhibited at ALL2015, I have photographed some of the Syrian families with school age children living in Doncaster. The format is in keeping with the previous Aspirations images; seated, full body, mixed natural light and flash, landscape photograph including details of their environment. The key difference is that the aspirations of the subjects incorporated in the image are written in the subjects’ native tongue, in this case, Arabic.
Firstly, I want to highlight the obvious, that refugees, wherever they are from, have the same needs and aspirations as British families, and secondly, I want to experiment with portraits that incorporate text that crucially is illegible for much of its (British) audience – audiences could not fail to take into consideration the English text in Aspirations Doncaster when looking at the portraits.
